Valleyfield

City in southern Québec, Canada, 52 km/32 mi southwest of Montréal, at the northeastern end of Lac Saint-François (the St Lawrence River), at the head of the Beauharnois Canal; population (1991) 27,600. The canal has left the city, in effect, on an island in the St Lawrence. It is a commercial and industrial centre as well as a port. Products include rubber, chemical, paper, bronze, and wood products, textiles, and foodstuffs. Its annual speedboat regatta is the largest in the world.

A seigneurie settled largely in the 1840s, when the first canal was built, Valleyfield developed with saw and cotton milling.
