Capital of Salamanca province in Castilla-León, western Spain, on the River Tormes, 260 km/162 mi northwest of Madrid; population (2001) 156,400. It produces pharmaceuticals and wool. Salamanca is a cultural centre, and its university was founded about 1230. There is a 13th-century cathedral, and a superbly designed square, the Plaza Mayor.
