Salang Highway

Main north-south route between Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, and Tajikistan; length 422 km/264 mi. The high-altitude Salang Pass and Salang Tunnel cross a natural break in the Hindu Kush Mountains about 100 km/60 mi north of Kabul. This supply route was a major target of the Mujahedin resistance fighters during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.
