Saldanha Bay

Saldanha Bay

Town on the coast of Western Cape province, South Africa, 90 km/56 mi northwest of Cape Town; population (2001 est) 48,700. It has a natural deep-sea harbour, the largest in South Africa, and there is a South African naval training base. Coal is mined locally, and the Sadanha steel plant processes iron ore brought by rail from the Sishen mine, approximately 800 km/500 mi inland.

The harbour at Saldanha Bay was in constant use during World War II.
