Salida

City and administrative headquarters of Chaffee County, central Colorado, on the Arkansas River, 64 km/40 mi west of Canon City; population (1990) 4,700. It ships grain, minerals, and livestock. There are railway workshops, sheet metal works, and several other industries. Salida also has hot springs and is a tourist centre.

Its river setting and the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1880 established Salida a distribution point for local mines.
