Salina

City and administrative headquarters of Saline County, central Kansas, on the Smoky Hill River just southwest of its confluence with the Saline River, 128 km/80 mi north of Wichita; population (1990) 42,300. A major processing and shipping centre for winter wheat, alfalfa, livestock, and dairy products, it is also in an area rich in oil and natural gas. The city contains foundries, and its products include aircraft, clothing, and farm equipment.

Salina was founded in 1858 and was an early antislavery centre. It flourished with the coming of the railway in 1867. It is the site of Kansas Wesleyan University (1886) and Marymount College of Kansas (1922).

Salina

Town in central New York State, adjacent to Syracuse, on the northeastern shore of Onondaga Lake; population (1990) 35,100. It is a residential and industrial suburb of Syracuse.

It was established in the 1790s in a salt-producing area (hence the name). The villages of Mattydale (population (1990) 6,400) and Liverpool (population (1990) 2,600) are within the town.

Salina

Town in northeastern Oklahoma, on the Neosho River, 72 km/45 mi east of Tulsa; population (1990) 1,200. Oklahoma's first permanent white settlement was established on this site in the early 19th century by fur traders.
