Salina Cruz

Free port on the south coast of the state of Oaxaca in Mexico; population (1995) 76,200. Situated on the north coast of the isthmus of Tehuantepec, Salina Cruz is about 208 km/129 mi from the port of Coatzacoalcos, with which it is connected by rail. It is an important distribution point on the Pacific coast for the oil which comes by pipeline from Minatitlan on the Gulf of Mexico. The town has an oil refinery, small-scale chemical processing plants, and also a naval base.

The artificial harbour was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century.
