salivary gland

In mammals, one of two glands situated near the mouth responsible for the manufacture of saliva and its secretion into the mouth. The salivary glands are stimulated to produce saliva during a meal. Saliva contains an enzyme, ptyalin, and mucous which are essential for the mastication and initial digestion of food.
