Salmhofer, Franz (1900–1975)

Austrian composer and conductor. Having learnt music as a choirboy, he studied at the Vienna Academy under Schreker and others. He later taught at Horak's music school. Between 1929 and 1939 he was conductor at the Burgtheater, for which he wrote incidental music to over 300 plays. From 1955 he was director of the Vienna Volksoper.

operas Dame im Traum (1935), Iwan Sergejewitsch Tarassenko (1938), Das Werbekleid (1946) and several others; ballets Das lockende Phantom (1927), Der Taugenichts in Wien, Weihnachtsmärchen (1933), Österreichische Bauernhochzeit; incidental music for Shakespeare's The Tempest, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Goethe's Faust (pts. I and II); overture to Maeterlinck's L'Intruse and others.

Other works

Der geheimnisvolle Trompeter, Fairy-Tale for orchestra; suite for chamber orchestra; concertos for cello, violin, and cello and trumpet; six string quartets, piano quartet in F minor, serenade for string trio.
