Salmond, John Maitland (1881–1968)

British air marshal in World War I. After service in the South African War 1901–02, he learned to fly at his own expense and joined the Royal Flying Corps 1912 as an instructor. In 1918 he succeeded Air Marshal Trenchard as commander of the Independent Air Force in France and was responsible for much of the strategic bombing campaign that followed.
