Salote Tupou III, Mafili'o Pilolevu

    0.01 sec.

Salote Tupou III, Mafili'o Pilolevu (1900–1965)

Queen of Tonga 1918–65. Her prosperous reign saw the reunion, for which she was mainly responsible, of the Tongan Free Church majority with the Wesleyan Church in 1924. There were also significant improvements in education, health, and agriculture. Education was made mandatory from 1929, a central medical school was established in 1929, and the economy was diversified to lessen dependence on the production of copra.

Educated in Auckland, New Zealand, she married Prince William Tupoulahi Tungi at the age of 15, and succeeded her father, King George Tupou II (who had reigned since 1893), in 1918. She was succeeded on her death by her eldest son, Prince Tungi, who became King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV.
