Salt Lake County

County in north-central Utah, bounded in the southwest by the Great Salt Lake; area 1,909 sq km/ 737 sq mi; population (1990) 726,000. Salt Lake City is its capital; with its suburbs, it dominates the economic life of the county. Outside the urban areas, there are copper, lead, silver, zinc, and gold mining; livestock ranching; market gardening; and the growing of alfalfa, sugar beet, grain, and fruit.

A tableland drained by the Jordan River, the county has the Wasatch Range in the east.
