Saltillo

City in, and administrative capital of, the state of Coahuila in Mexico; population (1995) 440,800. Situated on a plateau at an altitude of 1,575 m/5,167 ft, the town lies about 90 km/ 55 mi southwest of Monterrey. Its prime importance is as a rail and road communications centre, though it is also a distribution centre for the agricultural products of the region, which include cotton. Industries include clothing and textile manufacturing, ceramics, and coal mining. There is a university and an 18th-century cathedral. Saltillo is also a tourist resort.

The city is known locally for its production of brightly coloured serapes (blankets). Originally founded in 1575, Saltillo is Coahuila's oldest city. Annual celebrations include dances in May and August, and fiestas and bullfights in October.
