Salto| Capital of the department of the same name in Uruguay; population (1996) 80,823. Salto is situated on the River Uruguay, in the Lerma valley, opposite Concordia in Argentina, 410 km/255 mi northwest of Montevideo. Salto has a livestock centre and meat-packing industry, in addition to other industrial enterprises. It is at the centre of a citrus-fruit-growing area. |
