Salzkammergut

Alpine district in the south of the province of Upper Austria, extending into Styria and Salzburg; area 2,330 sq km/900 sq mi. There is cattle-rearing and forestry, and a salt industry. The Salzkammergut is popular with tourists for its scenery of mountains and lakes, and the many sports and health resorts in the region include Ischl, Gmunden, and Hallstatt.

The main lakes in the Salzkammergut are the Attersee (47 sq km/18 sq mi), the Traunsee (39 sq km/15 sq mi), the Mondsee (25 sq km/10 sq mi), the Wolfgangsee (18 sq km/7 sq mi), and the Hallstattersee (13 sq km/5 sq mi). The highest peak is the Dachstein (2,996 m/9,829 ft).
