Samar Occidental

Province of southwest Samar Island in the Philippines; area 5,610 sq km/2,166 sq mi; population (1995) 589,000. The capital is Catbalogan, where there is a university. It is a rugged, rainforested province in the typhoon belt of the Philippines. Products include coconuts, corn, and tubers; minerals, including pyrite, are produced. Fishing is carried out from Calbayog harbour.

The extremely rare gobinee fish (Caecogobius cryptophtalmus) was found in a cave at Caliba in 1987.
