Samar Oriental

Province of eastern Samar Island in the Philippines; area 4,341 sq km/1,676 sq mi; population (1995) 362,000. The capital is Borongan. The province is rugged and forested, lying in the typhoon belt of the Philippines. Products include rice, corn, and coconuts. Rattan and bamboo are exported from Borongan, an important trading centre.

Samar Oriental contains Guivan, the site of an abandoned US airbase, once the largest in the Pacific.
