samatha

In Buddhism, any form of meditation designed to still the mind. It aims to stop the flow of thoughts until the mind is like a clear, calm lake. Methods include breath-counting, concentrating on the actions of walking, or performing any activity with total focus of mind. Using a series of formats to evoke feelings of metta (loving kindness) is also a samatha meditation.
