Sambre

River of France and Belgium, rising in the département of Aisne and flowing 190 km/118 mi northeast to join the Meuse, of which it is the main tributary, at Namur. The towns of Landrecies and Maubeuge are on its banks in France; and Thuin, Charleroi, Châtelet, and Floreffe in Belgium. It is navigable for about 145 km/90 mi.

In World War I it was the scene of the Battle of the Sambre, the last great battle on the Western Front, in November 1918 (see Sambre, Battle of the).
