Sampras, Pete (1971- )US tennis player who, by his retirement in 2002, had won the most Grand Slams in the history of the game. At the age of 19 years and 28 days, he became the youngest winner of the US Open in 1990. A fine serve-and-volleyer, Sampras also won the inaugural Grand Slam Cup in Munich in 1990. In 1998 he finished at the top of the ATP men's world rankings for an unprecedented sixth consecutive year. In August 1999 he beat Ivan Lendl's all-time record of 270 weeks at the top of the ATP Tour world rankings. In 2000 he won his seventh Wimbledon men's singles title, equalling the record established by English player William Renshaw between 1881 and 1889. It was Sampras's 13th Grand Slam singles title, an unprecedented achievement in the men's game. He didn't win another tournament until September 2002, when he triumphed in the US Open for the fifth time and claimed his 14th Grand Slam.
