Sampson, William (1764-1836)

Irish-born lawyer and patriot. Admitted to the Irish bar, he was exiled for treason, eventually travelling to New York in 1806. An eloquent advocate of personal rights, he championed the movement to codify common law. Among his writings are a two-volume History of Ireland (1833).
