Adams, Samuel (1722–1803)

US politician, the chief instigator of the Boston Tea Party (see American Revolution). He was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, served in the Continental Congress, and anticipated the French emperor Napoleon in calling the British a ‘nation of shopkeepers’.

Adams took the colonists' side in the disturbances caused by the Stamp Act 1765, and in 1765–74 was a member of the legislature of Massachusetts. He was lieutenant-governor of Massachusetts 1789–93 and governor until 1797. He was a second cousin of President John Adams.
