Adler, Samuel (1928– )

German-born US composer. He moved to the USA at the age of 11 and studied with Walter Piston and Randall Thompson at Harvard, and with Aaron Copland and Serge Koussevitzky at Tanglewood. He was professor of composition at Eastman School of Music, New York, from 1966.

Works

Opera

The Outcasts of Poker Flat (1962), The Wrestler (1972); The Disappointment, reconstruction of an American ballad opera of 1767.

Orchestral

six symphonies (1953–83); organ concerto (1970); concerto for orchestra (1977), flute concerto (1977), piano concerto (1983).

Chamber

seven string quartets (1945–81); four violin sonatas (1948–65).

Vocal

From out of Bondage, cantata (1969); The Vision of Isaiah for bass, chorus, and orchestra (1963).

Adler, Samuel (1809–1891)

German-born rabbi. In 1857 he came to New York to become rabbi of Temple Emanu-El. He wrote numerous monographs and played a leading role in Reform Judaism; his revision of the prayer book became a model for later Reform prayer books.

Although born in Taiwan in 1957, he earned his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, under the tutelage of Samuel Adler and Christopher Rouse, and writes in a language rooted in western tonality.
Two Hanukkah pieces by Samuel Adler and Michael Isaacson will be presented, as will a little tongue-in-cheek frivolity that will have the audience smiling, or possibly laughing out loud.
A noted proponent of contemporary music, he has performed the world premieres of works written for him by George Crumb, Vincent Persichetti, Gunther Schuller, Samuel Adler and others.
