Clarke, Samuel (1675-1729)

English cleric and philosopher. He became chaplain to Queen Anne in 1706 and rector of St James, Westminster, in 1709. His famous discussion with the German mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Leibniz as to the relation of time and space to God was undertaken at the request of the Princess of Wales, and the papers were published in 1717.

Clarke had a very high contemporary reputation as a philosopher, and was regarded by some as second only to the English philosopher John Locke.
