San Angelo

City in western central Texas, USA, near the confluence of the North and Middle Concho rivers, 145 km/90 mi southwest of Abilene; population (2000) 88,400. It is an important cattle trading, and a wool and mohair centre. Industries include textiles (Ethicon and Levi Strauss), food-processing, oil-refining, and the manufacture of pottery. San Angelo's annual Stock Show and Rodeo is attended by cowboys and tourists from a wide area.

San Angelo was founded in 1869 as a staging post on the Chidester Stage Line, and the Goodnight–Loving cattle trail. It is the site of old Fort Concho, now a museum.

Tributaries of the Concho rivers, upstream of the city, have been extensively dammed to create reservoirs.

There are a number of military bases in the area.
