San Bernardino

City in California, USA, 80 km/50 mi east of Los Angeles; population (2000) 185,400. A commercial and distribution centre, it is situated in a vast citrus fruit-growing district in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains; rail and road routes enter the Los Angeles basin here through the Cajon Pass. Industries include the processing of food and lumber, and the manufacture of steel, and aerospace and electronic equipment.

San Bernardino was named by Spanish Franciscan missionaries who arrived in 1810. A group of Mormons laid out the community in the 1850s.

It is the seat of a campus of the California State University, and the site of Norton Air Force Base.

The city hosts a national orange show.
