San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation

Reservation across the Salt River from the White Mountain (Fort Apache) reservation, and 115 km/70 mi east of Phoenix, Arizona; area 7,540 sq km/2,911 sq mi; population (1990) 7,300. Set in a mix of forest, desert, and grassland, it is home to several different groups forced here after 19th-century US-Apache wars. San Carlos (population (1990) 2,900) is its headquarters; Globe, to the west, is a trade centre.
