San Clemente

City in southwestern California, on the Pacific Ocean, 100 km/60 mi southeast of Los Angeles and just west of Camp Pendleton; population (1990) 41,100. Tourism and the retired population are important to the city's economy; its beach is well known.

San Clemente was founded in 1925 during the southern California real estate boom that followed World War I. It was named after the offshore San Clemente Island. Cut flowers, eggs, and strawberries are produced locally.

A Spanish-style house, La Casa Pacifica, was bought here in 1969 by President Richard Nixon and used as his ‘Western White House’.
