San Cristóbal

Capital of Tachirá state, western Venezuela, situated 800 m/26,250 ft above sea level in the northern Andes overlooking the River Torbes, 56 km/35 mi from the Colombian border; population (1990) 220,700. It is the centre of a coffee-growing region, and other products include textiles, cement, leather goods, and tobacco. San Cristóbal was founded by Spanish settlers in 1561 and stands on the Pan-American Highway.
