San Felipe

Capital of Yaracuy state, in northern Venezuela, 165 km/103 mi west of Caracas; population (1996) 65,793. It is the main town in the Turbio valley, and is connected by rail with Tucacas on the coast. It is a centre of an agricultural region producing coffee, cocoa, sugar, cotton, rice, maize, fruits, cattle, and hides.

San Felipe

Town in the Valparaíso region and capital of the Aconcagua province in central Chile, 80 km/50 mi northeast of the city of Valparaíso; population (1992) 54,600. The town is in a rich Aconcagua Valley agricultural area, and is also a centre of gold and copper mining.

San Felipe

Town in southeastern Texas, on the Brazos River, 68 km/42 mi west of Houston; population (1990) 600. It draws visitors interested in Texan history.

History

It was settled in 1823 by the US pioneer Stephen F Austin's colonists. Known as San Felipe de Austin, it produced the first Texas newspaper (1829) and in the 1830s was the site of conventions leading towards independence. It was burned in 1836 in the face of the advance of Santa Anna's Mexican forces.
