San Felipe

Town in southeastern Texas, on the Brazos River, 68 km/42 mi west of Houston; population (1990) 600. It draws visitors interested in Texan history.

History

It was settled in 1823 by the US pioneer Stephen F Austin's colonists. Known as San Felipe de Austin, it produced the first Texas newspaper (1829) and in the 1830s was the site of conventions leading towards independence. It was burned in 1836 in the face of the advance of Santa Anna's Mexican forces.
