City in southwestern California, 14 km/9 mi east of central Los Angeles and just east of Alhambra; population (1990) 37,100. Largely residential, the city has some light industry. The Mission San Gabriel Arcangel (1771) houses paintings and relics.

For many years after its founding, the community was the gateway to the Pacific coast from the western side of the Mojave Desert. In 1781 the Spanish governor set out from here to found the pueblo that became Los Angeles.
