San Germán

Community (zona urbana) in southwestern Puerto Rico, 16 km/10 mi southeast of Mayagüez; population (1990) 12,000. It is in the San Germán Municipio (population (1990) 35,000). It is a trade and coffee and sugar processing centre and the seat of the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico (1912), which dominates local life.

It has a variety of historic buildings, including 19th-century haciendas. The Porta Coeli Church (1606), one of the oldest in the Americas, now houses a museum.

History

San Germán was originally founded on the south coast in 1512, and moved to its present location in 1573. It was Puerto Rico's second city until the rise of Ponce in the 19th century, and was one of the island's coffee capitals in the 19th century.
