San Gimignano

Town in Tuscany region, north-central Italy, 30 km/19 mi northeast of Siena, overlooking the Elsa valley; population (1993 est) 7,100. San Gimignano retains its medieval appearance, with town walls and 13 medieval and Renaissance towers. There are fine frescoes in the 12th-15th-century Collegiate Church, and the 13th-century Church of St Augustine has a cycle of frescoes by the Renaissance painter Benozzo Gozzoli. Tourism is an important part of the town's economy.
