San Ignacio de Agana

Town in, and administrative capital of, the Cayo district in Belize; population (1996) 11,300. Situated 16 km/10 mi from the western border of Belize, on the Belize River, 110 km/68 mi from Belize City, San Ignacio de Agana is the largest town in Belize and is an agricultural centre for citrus, cattle and peanut farms in the area. It also produces chicle (an ingredient of chewing gum), and has lumber industries. The town is a popular starting-point for trips into the Mountain Pine Ridge.

San Ignacio is linked to the town of Santa Elena on the east side of the Belize River by the Hawkesworth Bridge, the town's landmark suspension bridge. There are Mayan ruins nearby at Xunantunich.

The tropical Macal River valley (the eastern branch of the Belize River) is a prosperous farming and holiday centre.
