San Ildefonso Pueblo

Tewa-speaking pueblo in north-central New Mexico, on the Rio Grande, 27 km/17 mi northwest of Santa Fe; population (1990) 1,500. It is known for its traditional black pottery, especially that of Maria Martinez.

San Ildefonso Pueblo was one of the last to surrender in the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. During the 1920s and 1930s it was a centre for the pueblo arts revival.

San Ildefonso Pueblo (Po-Woh-Ge-Oweenge, or where the water cuts through), [telephone] 505/455-2273 or 505/455-3549, is 22 miles northwest of Santa Fe off State Route 502.
