San Joaquin (river)

San Joaquin

River in California, southwest USA; length 560 km/350 mi. It rises in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in east California, and flows southwest and northwest through the valley between the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Range to its junction with the Sacramento River. It irrigates a rich agricultural area.

The river is dammed at the Friant barrage and its water deflected south to the arid areas in the extreme south of the Central Valley.
