San Juan Bautista

City in central California, on the San Andreas Fault, in the eastern foothills of the Gabilan Range, 42 km/26 mi northeast of Monterey; population (1990) 1,600. Established around a 1797 mission, with the largest mission church in California (completed in 1812), it was formerly a ranching centre, and now draws tourists.
