San Juan Islands

Archipelago of 172 islands in northwest Washington, USA, north of Puget Sound, south of the Strait of Georgia, and east of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The islands form San Juan County (population (1990) 10,000).

The four largest and most populated islands are Orcas (area 147 sq km/57 sq mi), San Juan (143 sq km/55 sq mi), Lopez (76 sq km/30 sq mi), and Shaw (20 sq km/8 sq mi). Half the county's year-round population lives on San Juan Island; numbers increase greatly during the summer months.

The Spanish explored the San Juan Islands about 1790, and they became part of the USA in 1872, following a boundary dispute with Great Britain.
