San Leandro

City in north-central California, on the east side of San Francisco Bay, adjoining Oakland and its International Airport; population (1990) 68,200. Part of the East Bay metropolis, it has nurseries and lorry assembly, baking, and food processing plants, and manufactures paint, electronic and office equipment, chemicals, gardening supplies, and a variety of other products.

Originally part of Rancho San Leandro, it was settled after the 1849 gold rush, and was the county capital 1854–71. It was long a cherry growing and dairying centre, with a large Portuguese community.
