San Luis Obispo

City and administrative headquarters of San Luis Obispo County in west-central California, on San Luis Obispo Creek, in the Los Osos Valley at the base of the Santa Lucia Range, 260 km/160 mi northwest of Los Angeles; population (1990) 42,000. Tourism has long been important in this highway community, home of a pioneering 1925 ‘mo-tel’. Government offices and various light industries employ residents.

A California Polytechnic State University branch (1901), Cuesta College (1964), and a National Guard Reservation are here. The controversial Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant (1984) is 18 km/11 mi to the southwest.

History

The early community grew up around the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa (1772). Ceramic tiles developed here became the norm in regional architecture, and olive trees are said to have been introduced to North America at the mission. It became a pueblo in 1844, then a city in 1856. After 1894 it grew as a Southern Pacific Railroad division point, and local oil was shipped through Port San Luis to the southwest.
