San Mateo

City in north-central California, on the west shore of San Francisco Bay, 24 km/15 mi southeast of central San Francisco; population (1990) 85,500. It is a financial, commercial, and shopping centre for the Bay Area, and has a substantial amount of Silicon Valley-related technological industry.

The College of San Mateo (1922) and Bay Meadows Racecourse are here. The five-span San Mateo–Hayward Bridge (1967), passing some 11 km/7 mi over the bay, is one of the longest in the USA.

History

Although there was a mission hospice here by 1793, the community was not laid out until 1863, when wealthy San Franciscans began to build luxurious homes in a planned community.
