San Mateo County

County in north-central California, on the south of the San Francisco–San Mateo Peninsula; area 1,158 sq km/447 sq mi; population (1990) 649,600. Its capital is Redwood City. Its western valleys produce a major portion of the nation's artichokes; the eastern suburban area has market gardens, dairies, nurseries, and technological industry.

Originally part of San Francisco County, it includes many San Francisco suburbs along San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, with the Santa Cruz Mountains running northwest–southeast through its centre. In the southwest are forested hillsides. Its cities include South San Francisco, San Mateo, Burlingame, Daly City, Hillsborough, San Bruno, Atherton, and Menlo Park.
