La Palma

Most westerly of the Canary Islands, Spain, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; area 730 sq km/282 sq mi; population (1991) 78,000. The capital is Santa Cruz de la Palma. The island is mountainous, including Pico de la Cruz at 2,365 m/7,759 ft, and well forested. Industries include wine, fruit, honey, and silk. Tourism is important to the island.

La Palma

City in southwestern California, 27 km/17 mi southeast of central Los Angeles and east of Coyote Creek; population (1990 est) 15,400. Originally called Dairyland, it was established by dairy farmers during the 1960s in an attempt to prevent urban development, but changed its name in 1965 and became primarily residential.
