San Miguel de Tucumán

Capital of Tucumán province, northwest Argentina; situated on the Rio Sali, to the east of the Sierra de Aconquija range in the foothills of the Andes; population (2001) 527,500. Industries include sugar mills and distilleries. It is the commercial centre of the province, and the largest city in northern Argentina. Founded in 1565, San Miguel de Tucumán was the site of the signing of the Argentine declaration of independence from Spain on 9 July 1816. There are several colonial buildings remaining in the city, including the Governor's Palace, the cathedral, and the church of San Francisco. The university was founded in 1914.
