San Nicolas (de los Arroyos)

River port in the north of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the River Paraná, 240 km/149 mi northwest of the city of Buenos Aires; population (1996) 114,752. An important outlet for the produce of the Pampas, its main industries are meat packing and processing and flour-milling and storing. A large steel plant started production here in the early 1960s. There is also an important hydroelectric power station. The port also acts as a railway junction, serving the surrounding agricultural area.
