San Rafael

City and administrative headquarters of Marin County, northwest California, on San Rafael Bay (an arm of San Francisco Bay), 21 km/13 mi northwest of San Francisco; population (1990) 48,400. It is residential with light industries. US architect Frank Lloyd Wright's Marin Civic Center (1957) is well known.

The city grew up around the San Rafael Arcángel Mission (1817), and was formerly a ranch town. The arrival of the railway in 1884 and 20th-century bridge connections spurred suburban growth. The Dominican College of San Rafael (1890) is here.
