Sanandaj

Capital of Kurdistan province, northwestern Iran, 410 km/255 mi west of Tehran; population (2006) 316,900. Sanandaj (also called Sena) is situated at an altitude of 1,520 m/4,990 ft in the Zagros Mountains. Industries include carpet making, sugar refining, cotton weaving, and metalware production.

Mamousta Sheikholeslam, the representative of the people of Kurdistan Province in Iran's Assembly of Experts, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in a mosque in the provincial capital Sanandaj less than two weeks ago.
It said a number of other people were wounded when security forces attacked and dismantled a "terrorist team linked to a counter-revolutionary trend" on Sunday night in the western city of Sanandaj.
Mullah Mohammed Sheikh Olislam, who represents the province in Iran's top clerical body the Assembly of Experts, was shot twice in the head by unknown attackers at a mosque in Sanandaj, Kurdistan's main city.
