Sanctorius, Sanctorius (1561–1636)Italian physiologist who pioneered the study of metabolism and invented the clinical thermometer and a device for measuring pulse rate. Sanctorius introduced quantitative methods into medicine. For 30 years he weighed both himself and his food, drink, and waste products.
