Sandal Magna

Suburb of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, 3 km/2 mi southeast of the city. It has the remains of a castle, constructed about 1300, which became a stronghold of Richard, Duke of York; he went from there to fight in the Battle of Wakefield (1460). Sandal Magna has a church dating from the 11th century.
